This year started off with finishing moving my home based studio from a large closet down to the hall to this room, a process that began in the fall of 2023. I was running out of space in my old studio which sat proud at 7x9 feet. My new studio is a whopping! 11x11 feet. Woot!
Here is a photo safari of that endeavor.
Let's first catch up where it began. Here is a picture of our old guest bedroom after I had just moved out the beds. I was home alone that day, but that did not stop me. Very soon after moving the beds out, I had the carpet demo'ed and rolled up. The carpet was in excellent condition and I found a good new home for it, so it did not go to waste.
Before installing the carpet a few years ago, we had fixed the sub flooring and it was still in excellent condition as you can see, so we were all systems go to run the wood flooring (LVT) into this room. Freya, my cat, came by to inspect that all was going well.
You can see the wood flooring from the hallway ending in a straight line at the door.
I ordered some more of the same flooring and while we waited for it to come in, I gave the room a fresh coat of white paint and then I went and got some shelving for my studio and gave it all a white wash. You can see on the left how yellow the wood started out and then how it all looks after the white wash.
I even bought a little roller cart, that fit into the shelving unit, to house all my plastic sheets which I use while drying out my ceramics slowly. Also, sneak peek of the flooring.
We removed all the straight-cut boards by the door and saw that there was some unevenness by the door from when they installed the carpet transition, so I mixed up some self leveling concrete and poured and leveled it out and that made the transition seamless. After it dried I coated it in a moisture barrier, all the same treatment that the whole floor in the room had a while back.
Then the new flooring came in and we slit in the new boards into the old floor and then laid it into the rest of the room. It went insanely fast. In my usual belt and suspender approach, we also added a plastic moisture barrier since there will be quite some water handling in this room.
Then after the floor was laid we re-installed the baseboards and then put up the shelving and carried in my throwing wheel. So far, so good.
The shelves quickly got filled and I began working in there immediately. I got some more cabinets and a wooden butcher block for a work table. Frank built some wooden stands for the cabinets for the table and hung this awesome work light over the table.
My old studio down the hall, we then turned into a display area for my finished pieces. I wrote a post about how we originally built this studio space.
This past year, we have slowly worked on all the finishing details and here is the full reveal of my new studio space.
First up is the existing closet that was in here. We outfitted it with some shelving for tools.
The white shelves where outfitted with lights. Some artwork hung to make it cozy and the work table was finished when the drawers came back in stock.
On top of the work bench some ceramic vessels hold more tools. A peg board holds some paper towel, cookie cutters, pencils and scissors.
This corner has room for a comfy chair where I write my notes and sketch new ideas. We moved the bat shelf from the old studio. We built that out of some scrap wood and dowels.
We hung hooks for brooms and dust pans. Found some in neutral colors.
This summer I got a custom (Frank built) table piece for my wheel to hold my size gauge as a birthday present. It's the thing behind the bucket. Under the work desk I have room to prop up a mirror on top of one of my glaze buckets. I use it while throwing to see how the shape is coming along.
And finally here you can see the whole reason for moving my studio apart from getting more room: The window! I now have some daylight while I work and I could not be happier!
