Empty bowl event in Burien today - What is that?

Today is Empty Bowl event in Burien Community. But first, let's quickly rewind just a little bit back to early December at Moshier pottery studio where a bunch of potters met up for four days to throw some bowls.

Here is a snapshot of one time when several potters were at the wheel at the same time. And one run of bowls I made the second day. 

In January when the bowls have been bisqued we come back into the studio and a bit glaze fest ensues. Additionally everyone donates bowls throughout the year as well. By the time the Empty Bowls event rolls around, many hundreds of bowls have been created and donated to this cause by the Moshier students.

Fast forward to today when I went to Empty bowls at the local community center in Burien. It is a building with a fantastic midcentury flair. I could see the line forming outside already even though I came early in the day. This is a really popular event.

Once inside, you pay for a bowl and meal ticket, and if you so desire, a raffle ticket. Then you head on inside. Straight ahead is a big set up of tables with pottery and to the right a large dining hall. 

Now you have to decide if you have FOMO or are a YOLO and where you stand on pottery vs soup and then plan accordingly. Because next up you get to both choose a piece of pottery from the large selection of pots, AND head into the dining hall to get some soup. 

Below are some fellow towns people, who clearly know what's what, and are choosing to head over to the pots BEFORE eating. 

Check out all these wonderful bowls. There is something for very taste in the spectrum. Truly.

You can clearly see some seasoned empty bowl goers have a technique: Be sure to pick a good one and hold on while you look to see if there is one you like more down the other tables. Decisions, decisions. 

Oh, one of my white bowls spotted in the wild. Hello old friend. On the right, my surface design and technique instructor is making sure that there are no empty spots on the table, refilling as soon as pots are picked.

After successfully picking you favorite pot, then you can go bid on a pot at the auction - see at the end of the post, and then you are ready to head into the dining hall where local restaurants and bakeries have donated a fabulous meal. 

First up you pick which soup you want. Today it was Corn Chowder by Huckleberry, Crab Bisque by Merril Gardens or Lemon Chicken by Village Green in West Seattle (West Seattle, which amusingly is located south of down town Seattle). Anyway. Next up, grab a roll by Grand Central Bakery and then pull up infront of the cookies and pick one of three kinds from Bakery Nouveau, Treat Cookies, Low Rider Cookies or Maven Meals.

Then plunk down at a table and chat with those you came with, or someone new!

Moshier Art Center potters have donated bowls to be filled with soup at this fun event—all are invited! Your donation will get you the opportunity to pick out a beautiful handmade bowl, as well as a simple but wonderful meal of soup, bread, dessert, and drink donated by local businesses. Empty Bowls events can be found around the country raising money to combat hunger in our communities. 

Proceeds will benefit the Highline Area Food Bank and White Center Food Bank.
