A commission for a huge X-large bowl just went home to Texas

At the end of last year, I got a commission from one of my customers: "Please make me a very large footed bowl for my kitchen island". And that was my cue to take on a very big challenge.

I have never thrown anything in that scale before. I threw this bowl to an opening size of the largest bat size I have that I can maneuver -  a 15 inch bat, and I threw a foot separately. Then I let them dry to leather heard and as you can see below, during that first drying the opening luckily shrank to fit just inside that 15" bat. By comparison the usual bat size I work with is just 12 inches. Here is a bit of video of the making process.

After the bowl was thrown, trimmed and put together,  I wrapped the it very well in plastic and let it dry s-l-o-w-l-y over a couple of weeks to avoid any cracks. After firing, glazing and firing it a final time, I had a huge bowl on my hands. It shrank during each of the firings as well, but was still sitting at a hefty 13 x 13 inches and 7.125 inches tall by the end.

The pictures do not do it justice in terms of how big it is, but let me show you measured in ... how about - pears?

So before shipping it off to my customer in Texas, I had a little photoshoot where I filled the bowl with 12 pears. 12 pears. They did not even clear the rim of the bowl.

As you can see from the video below, I had to fill the bowl with another bowl and some kitchen towels, then gingerly stack all 12 pears to the front of the vessel to make it seem full. Frank and I are still eating pears.

Here we have the 12 pears in the bowl by themselves - before - and then after I propped them up on a bowl and some towels - after. This bowl's got back ROOM!

I tried out my cat for size but even that doesn't really show the size because my cat is pretty large, but hey he is cute and handsome. He looks stern because of his white mouth, but I promise you he is a cuddle bug. I call him my adhesive sticker.

My sweet customer in Texas just received her bowl and this order along with a couple of others has now launched me into shipping my ceramics. Read more about that here (link to come)
