Kiln unloading no 21 - 7 favorite ceramic pieces from my latest firing

Welcome to kiln opening number 21. Number 21 is a glaze kiln and therefore I want to share with you the 7 best pieces or groups of pieces the kiln gave me. I affectionately think of these awards as "Earthies" awards. (Earth=clay) At the end of the post I am going to declare the Kiln Winner. I have declared a kiln winner ever since my very first glaze firing. The Kiln Winner is the piece that makes me the most exited to pull from that kiln firing. 

To build on the excitement, I have made 7 categories where I pick a piece or group of pieces for each. They are: noted glaze, knows its shape, pattern pot, flexing texture, favorite newcomer, stacks or group and honorable mention. From this group I pick my favorite: the kiln winner. Let's get into it.

First up is this 8 in x 5.25 in bowl with a new blush glaze, that I just started using. If pink can be neutral, this is it. This bowl is so smooth to the touch.

Next up is this 9.5 in tall bubble vase that I also secretly refer to as "the peanut". I am sure you can see why.  The form is so good on this one, right?

Next, it's the first time I used this glaze with this clay body and I was so pleasantly surprised by both the yellowness of this otherwise beige glaze and the overlaps on the glazed scallops. This pattern landed this little vase solidly in the pattern pot category for a good surprise pattern. I will definitely be using this combo again. Unsurprisingly, this vase just sold. 

Next is a dotted vase. Each dot is added by hand after the vase is thrown and trimmed. This is a high risk pursuit because if just one of the dots decide to crack at the seam during any of its two firings, well, then it's "curtains for you my friend". I am happy to report that all the dots behaved well during both firings which adds a certain "phew" element to this 9 inch tall vase.

These little tea light houses are getting ready for the holidays. I threw them in porcelain (as opposed to stoneware like the rest) which means that there is a certain glow through the roof when you place them over an LED light or tea light. They have holes at the top for heat to escape if you use a real candle.  The houses vary in height from 6.25 in to 7.5 in. 

Next are a stack of small breakfast bowls. Very nice size for yoghurt if that is your thing. They are also a great size as a personal snack bowl. They measure aprox 5.25 wide by 2.75 in tall. I really like the matte white glaze on these. This makes the food inside them the star of the show. 

Honorable mention this time goes to this sweet little 5 inch tall vase. This was a class project where the challenge was to create a vase with an altered rim that was wider than the foot and incorporate slip with a texture. I made a subtle slip texture just below the neck which the glaze responded to nicely.   

Those are the 7 categories. And the winner is .....

The dotted vase. It is winning because if the shape and how well the glazing went as well as overcoming the technical difficulty of adding the dots. I just love this one!
