Handbuilding workshop in your home
Would you like to try your hand at making some ceramics?
I can come to your home and set up your dining table for you and your friends to teach you how to hand build a cup or a bowl. If that sounds fun, please read on.
You will each get a ceramics kit with your own piece of clay, some slip (clay glue) and a personal tool kit which you may keep if you wish.
There will be tools to share as well so you can try a variety of techniques.
I will give you a demo on how to hand build a cup/bowl and then help you as you make one yourself.
We then break for some appetizers/snacks, provided by you, the host, while we let the clay set up for a bit before the next steps. After the break, I demo how to attach a handle to your cup and you then get time to work on your cup or bowl and I will be there to answer any questions.
At the end of our workshop, each person selects which glaze they would like for their piece.
After the workshop, I will glaze and kiln fire your pieces and then drop them off to you so your friends can pick up their finished pieces.
What we will each bring to our workshop
I will come to your home and set up your table space for you and your friends.
I will bring a clay kit for each person (to keep) which contains 1 pound of clay, 1 container of slip, 1 personal tool kit.
The tool kit consists of
- A sponge
- A pointy wood skewer for scoring
- A flat craft stick for smoothing
- A wide craft stick for compressing
- A chamois for smoothing edges
For your table I will bring
A plastic table cover
For each participant: a 11x17 inch work mat and kitchen dish towel for wiping hands
Bowls for water and a variety of tools such as scrapers, rolling pins, wire, texture makers etc.
I will also bring a small table that I set up with some of my work which will be for sale during our workshop.
You will be responsible for serving snacks/appetizers and beverages during the 30-45 minute break, while the clay sets up.
Payment
There is a 4 person minimum payment due 48 hours before the workshop. Payment for each participant is due before the beginning of the workshop. I will send an online payment link and I accept credit card payment. No checks please. I will refund you for no-shows unless that brings the number of people below 4, in which case the amount due will be for 4 participants.
In the event of illness or any other reason, you are welcome to cancel or re-schedule the workshop.
After the workshop
Included in the workshop price: each participants may pick up to 2 things they make to have fired and glazed. One glaze per item.
After our workshop, I will take your creations with me to begin the firing and glazing process.
Your pieces will first be dried out to bone dry. Then they will be loaded into my kiln and go through the first firing. After that, I will rinse the bisqued pieces from dust, let them dry, then glaze them with the glaze you chose. After the glaze has dried, I will load your pieces into the kiln again for the second firing. Then I will sand the bottom of each piece and wash them and make them ready for delivery.
At this point, I will reach out to you, the host, and arrange a day where I can drop them off to your home for you are also welcome to pick them up.
Important: Please note that turning clay into ceramics is an unpredictable process. A trapped air pocket or poor structure of a piece or a number of other things can cause your piece to crack, crumble, bloat, or a number of other things. I am not responsible for any pieces not making it through this process and there are no refunds for any piece not turning out as expected.
